MARTINEZ, Calif. – A motorist has been arrested and an accident victim remains in critical condition after a vehicle collided Saturday afternoon with a pedestrian in a wheelchair in the intersection of Alhambra Avenue and Virginia Hills Drive, Cpl. Mike Estanol said.

Martinez Police Department began receiving calls at 4:12 p.m. Saturday about the accident, and as officers were dispatched to the scene, other callers said the motorist had driven away, Estanol said.

“Responding officers arrived and found the 72-year-old victim lying in the roadway,” he said.

The pedestrian was taken to John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, where he was described as in critical but stable condition, Estanol said. The victim’s identity has been withheld until his family is notified.

Witnesses who spoke with officers gave a description of what they saw, Estanol said. Based on those descriptions, officers arrested a woman identified as Irene Wong, 76, and took her to Martinez Police Department, where she was described as being cooperative with investigators.

“Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision,” he said. “This is still an ongoing investigation,” he said, and anyone who saw the collision or has additional information about the accident has been asked to call Estanol at the Martinez Police Department at (925) 372-3440.
