The Undead Bettys have debuted 118th out of 267 member leagues worldwide in Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) international rankings, the governing body for women’s flat track roller derby has announced.
The Undead Bettys, the Antioch-based roller derby league, has three adult teams – the Undead Bettys A team and the Damned Skaters B team for women and the men’s Skaters Grim – and the new Bite Club junior skating program. It is the only all-Contra Costa County league.
Members include those in two training teams as well as officials and non-skating volunteers.
“We do this because we love the sport,” the team said in a statement as soon as members learned about their ranking. “We love the friends who become family. We love the dramatic wins and painful losses. We love to skate. Our goal is to provide exciting action and share the exciting sport of roller derby to our community.”
The league has wrapped up its 2015 season, but skaters will be participating at 6 p.m. today (Friday, Oct. 23) in the Skate ‘N’ Scare Family Skate Night, sponsored by the Delta River Rats, at the Antioch Indoor Sports Center, 1210 Sunset Drive, Antioch, and at the Howl-o-weenie Mutt Strut for Antioch Animal Services at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 24) at 300 L St., Antioch, where they’ll judge the Monster Mash Dance Contest.
Formed in 2008, the Undead Bettys league is marking its seventh year as a grassroots organization, and it has filed for its California 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
The grassroots league is part of a growing movement that began shortly after 2000 in Texas, when an attempt to revive the old-style version of roller derby instead became a women-led effort to turn the former entertainment spectacle into a genuine full-contact sport.
The Undead Bettys teams bout against leagues from Oregon to Southern California, and train prospective skaters in sessions that promote both physical fitness and confidence in new skaters.
The Undead Bettys teams will start its 2016 schedule in January. Its website is www.undeadbettys.com.
