Special to the Tribune
Contra Costa County has a really strong Head Start Program. Head Start is a program to help pre-kindergarten kids be healthy and fit into society.
Contra Costa County’s program is diverse. It currently provides services to some 1,800 kids. The program works with parents who are having a hard time of it. Through the program, pre-kindergarten kids get health care and dental exams. They get supplies like diapers. They get help finding places to live. Their parents get financial training so they can establish credit – which many have never had.
The Community Services Bureau is totally embedded in our community. Its 15 centers and eight coordinated units can access dozens of available services throughout the County.
The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that’s well plugged into the County power structure. The organization sponsors an annual fundraising luncheon, with the motto: “It shouldn’t hurt to be a child.”
Division Manager Christina Reich told Martinez Rotary about her own experiences with the program many years ago. She was an impoverished mother who needed a little support to get her act together. The Contra Costa Community Services Bureau provided support when she needed it, and set her on her career path – which has lasted for 22 years. Christina loves helping kids and intends to continue doing it for many more years.
What a great organization! Martinez Rotary salutes our Community Service Bureau. Learn more at http://ehsd.org/overview.
