Rankin Pool Swim Program released

MARTINEZ, Calif. – With temperatures rising as summer approaches, the Martinez Recreation Department announces the release of the 2016 Swim Program for Rankin Aquatic Center (RAC).

The pool is now open with limited hours for lap swimming, water aerobics and the Martinez Community Swim Team.

However, the facility will open to the general public the first two weekends in June, with daily operations commencing Tuesday, June 14.

Parents may now sign up for infant, toddler and child swim lessons. The lessons are 30 minutes long and held over four days. Morning lessons will be held Tuesday through Friday, with afternoon and evening lessons held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Lap swimming hours will be limited through June 9. The summer lap schedule will begin June 10 and a minimum of two lanes will be available while the pool is open to the public. Season passes are now available, and this year, non-residents are able to purchase passes.

Water aerobics are held Thursdays from 3:14-4:15 p.m., and Fridays from 5:20-6:20 p.m. till June 9. Water aerobics June 13 through Oct. 28 will be available from 5:20-6:20 p.m., with additional deep water and Saturday schedules.

Pool parties are popular at Rankin Pool, with many options to choose from throughout the summer, including rec swim and private pool parties. Dates are filling up fast, however. Those wishing to plan a party are encouraged to call the pool immediately.

Not old enough to become a lifeguard but would like to work at the pool as a volunteer? Youngsters are encouraged to sign up for lifeguard camp and learn life saving skills.

Once students graduate from the program, they can volunteer to assist lifeguards during open swim, or assist instructors with swim lessons. Volunteers earn sweatshirts, t-shirts and other junior lifeguard gear.

The Water Safety Mermaids will also be out and about this year, teaching preschoolers how to remain safe in and around the water. The Mermaids visit the schools dressed in colorful “old time” bathing suits to read stories, discuss swimming rules and show the children how to wear a life jacket. The Mermaids invite everyone to attend the May Play Day at the pool, a fun afternoon of water safety and playtime at the Splash Pool. May Play Day will be Wednesday, May 25, from 2-4 p.m. Admission is free to children 2 years and under, $2 for children 3-17, and $3 for adults.
