Enough of ‘how to create buzz downtown’

Dear Editor,

I am so darned sick of hearing people talk about Martinez’s “potential,” and “if they only did that,” “if they only did this.” You can’t walk into any coffee shop, restaurant, boutique or bar in town without hearing someone flapping their gums about what would “fix” the city.

Who are “they” anyway? And who made all these talkers masters in city planning and cultural development? Do these people really think that they alone hold the keys to what’ll suddenly make Martinez a bastion of arts and commerce?

I swear if one more wanna-be philosopher sits down next to me and starts yapping about “how to create buzz” downtown, I’m going to yack.

These types of conversations are not limited to the hipster variety.

Oh, no … the gray-haired old ladies and gents are in on the conversation too. Not only do they yap on the subject during casual encounters, but they actually hold morning AND afternoon coffee meetings at several places downtown. This has been going on for decades.

With another election coming up, Lord only knows what’ll happen next. Every year it gets dirtier and dirtier around here, and I’ve had just about enough.

While I’m glad to see downtown escape from its post-apocalyptic days of the late ‘80s and most of the ‘90s with windows boarded up, filthy streets, bars and other unsavory businesses going in and out of storefronts, I’d say most of the progress has been made by the Main Street Martinez organization, and on a much smaller scale, the Chamber of Commerce. The City has aided too, to a degree.

To anyone that gabs about a “fix,” I have this reply: put your money where your mouth is and donate to one of these organizations, or support the city by being part of the public process, not part of the public problem. Your gabbing, rumor-mongering and downright crazy-a– partisan politics in non-partisan elections is getting a little old. Maybe with your support, Main Street can schedule something other than drunk walks.

And do us all a favor – if you want to talk about “fixing the city,” at least have the courtesy to talk about such things in the privacy of your own da–ed homes, not wherever the rest of us would like to go and relax and not be lambasted by your half-wit noise pollution.

Sincerely,

The Grinch (name on file)
