On Saturday afternoon Wisconsin and Martinez were forever linked in a way only sports can make sense of.

The Green Bay Packers used the 163rd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to select former Alhambra Bulldog and California wide receiver/kick returner Trevor Davis, making him the first Alhambra graduate to be drafted to play in the NFL.

“I’m so proud to be the first player from Alhambra to be drafted and creating that gateway for other Alhambra players and showing them that it is possible no matter what school you go to,” Davis said in a text message on Sunday afternoon.

Davis got the call on Saturday and was elated to get the news.

“I’m just super excited and blessed to have this opportunity,” Davis said. “[Green Bay] is such a great and historic team and I can’t wait to get to work and become part of the team.”

Davis was thought to have gone undrafted based on his NFL draft grade, but his performance at the combine opened some eyes and even saw him go before teammate Kenny Lawler.

In 13 games this season the Golden Bear receiver hauled in 40 passes and two touchdowns for 672 yards, a big improvement from his 2014 campaign. However his value according to NFL scouts seems to lie more in the kick return game.

He had more return yards (686) than receiving yards in 2015, and in 2015 he returned two kick offs for touchdowns, including one that went 100 yards against Washington State his junior year. He also returned another kick from 98 yards in the same game.

During his tenure at Alhambra, Davis was apart of the team 2009 team that went undefeated in DFAL play under coach Dave Silveira in his final year at the helm of the program. As a junior Davis caught 29 passes for 506 yards and had eight touchdowns.

Before he trades in the Martinez haze for the frozen tundra, Davis was reflective of his time at Alhambra, as well as what the city and community meant to him.

“I’m forever grateful for growing up in a small town like Martinez and making the life long friends that I made there,” he said. “It’s a part of me, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without the people I grew up with all my life and the city I grew up in.”
