Birds of Martinez …

Among the most elegant of the herons, the Snowy Egret (pictured above) is just one of many bird species that has made Martinez its home. Here they are seen foraging in the shallows at the Martinez Marina. The Snowy Egret’s plumes once fetched high prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species, but conservationists rallied to protect the birds and they are now common in shallow coastal wetlands. 1. I live in the Village Oaks area and have and heard and sighted a group of 5 screeching type raptors? or maybe small owl size birds flying at dusk and landing in a tall redwood in our neighborhood…at first glance from underneath the birds are whitish with maybe some grey or tan and it looked like it had owlish eyes? But they have a definite cry and I’m wondering what they are as they don’t look like a typical barn owl. Thanks bird watchers!
