The Giants bullpen wasted six shut out innings from Logan Webb, but San Francisco fought back with a game-tying home run by Thairo Estrada in the bottom of the ninth before Austin Slater’s game-winning 10th inning double proved decisive in a 6-5 ten inning win over the Miami Marlins in the season the opener for both teams at Oracle Park Friday afternoon.
San Francisco jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth on the strength of a solo homer by Joey Bart, the first of his young major league career.

San Francisco’s Thairo Estrada signals to the sky following his game-tying ninth inning home run against the Marlins Friday afternoon.
Webb was in midseason form, spacing out five singles before being removed after issuing his first walk of the game to Joey Wendle leading off the seventh. Two batters later Miami’s Jacob Stallings connected for a two-run blast off Dominic Leone to cut the Giants lead to 3-2. Brandon Belt hit a solo homer in the eighth to pad the lead to two.
With the Giants new projected closer Camilo Doval on in the ninth looking to close things out, the Marlins quickly dampened the near sellout crowds spirits when ninth place hitter Jazz Chisholm Jr. slammed a two run blast deep into the left field pavilion to put Miami up for the first time in the game 5-4.

Logan Webb looked like an ace on Friday in his first opening day assignment, throwing six shutout innings while striking out five Marlins batters in San Francisco’s 6-5 ten inning win at Oracle Park.
Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara was shaky but was able to keep Miami in the game, allowing three runs on three hits while walking five batters.
Webb praised his new battery mate Bart, who also scored the Giants first run of the season in the third, “A lot of it was Joey getting a feel for the game. He was amazing back there today. It was really cool to see him hit a home run, too. It was overall just amazing to get back there and kind of get back to what we were doing.”

San Francisco Giants “Captain” Brandon Belt throws out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2022 season.
“It’s what you live for,” Bart said. “I’ve always been a guy that lives for that. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have that in my heart. I’m super excited about getting out here and coming out and competing and setting the tone.”
The two teams return to the field Saturday afternoon for the second game of the three game series with Carlos Rodón (13-5, 2.37 in 2021) making his Giants debut against Miami’s Pablo López (5-5, 3.07 in 2021) at 1:05PM.
GAME NOTES:
Bart became the first Giant to collect his first career home run on Opening Day since Will Clark in 1986.
Slater’s tenth inning double was his first career walk-off hit and the Giants first walk-off win on Opening Day since 1987 against the Padres.
