A home run launched deep into McCovey Cove off the bat of Max Muncy on the seventh pitch of the game was Madison Bumgarner’s only mistake, but it was all the Dodgers needed Sunday, sending the Giants down to a 1-0 loss on a 90° afternoon at Oracle Park.
Los Angeles starter Walker Buehler (7-1) was lights out, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out nine while only allowing five hits. Kenley Jansen came on to pitch the ninth, recording his 19th save. It was the seventh time the Giants have been shut out this season.
The first inning pitch to Muncy was the only blemish on Bumgarner’s (3-6) performance, as the left-hander also went seven strong innings while only allowing four hits and fanning five Dodger batters.
Following an off day tomorrow, the Giants return to action Tuesday night for a pair of games against San Diego. Tyler Beede (0-2, 8.15) will be seeking his first Major League victory against the Padres Chris Paddack (4-4, 2.97) in the opener.
Giants first baseman Brandon Belt was scratched from Sunday’s starting lineup against the Dodgers after coming down with a stomach illness.
Buster Posey, out with a strained right hamstring, has resumed hitting and ran on a treadmill Sunday. The Giants are cautiously optimistic that he’ll be able to return to action once he’s eligible to come off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday.
