No matter what time of year you prefer to fish, do so with minimal strain on the environment. Check out these eco-friendly fishing practices.
You’ve probably heard the word “sustainable” many times to describe ways we can interact with the world around us. But how does sustainability work in practice?
Sustainable, eco-conscious fishing practices ensure that fish populations remain stable for future generations. Avoid tampering with the aquatic ecosystem by using the most environmentally friendly fishing practices this season.
Use Lead-Free Tackle
We learned in the 1970s that lead is toxic to many living things—that’s why we no longer use it in paint or gasoline. However, many fishing jigs and sinkers still have lead in them, and fish who are exposed to lead can experience reproductive problems.
Banish all traces of lead from your tackle box this season. Stock up on biodegradable lures instead.
Opt for a Rod and Reel
This classic fishing method leaves only the lightest of footprints on the environment. Reeling in your fish one at a time reduces bycatch—any other fish and critters you don’t want on your line. When you fish with a rod and reel and catch something you don’t want, you can quickly release it without harm.
Catch and Release
Speaking of release, this method of fishing is also friendly to the environment because you’re not reducing the number of fish in the water. Catch-and-release fishing is fun for you without hurting the fish or putting strain on the population. You’re also being courteous to future fishing enthusiasts by ensuring that there are enough fish for them, too.
The exception to this rule is if you reel in an invasive species. Get familiar with the most common invasive species in your preferred fishing hole; if you do catch one, don’t let it go! You’ll actually do the ecosystem a favor by holding on to it.
Watch Your Carbon Footprint
If you’re taking a boat out onto the water, be mindful of how much energy it’s using. Global climate change due to carbon use is increasing our oceans’ temperatures and threatening many aquatic species.
Use a stainless steel propeller on your boat to reduce drag and increase energy efficiency. Perform regular engine maintenance and install an electric fuel meter so you can monitor how much you’re using.
You can be kind to the environment without sacrificing your fishing hobby—just be respectful of the Earth around you and minimize your impact on it. The most environmentally friendly fishing practices allow you to catch fish to your heart’s content without disturbing the ecosystem.
