Sharks complete comeback with 3-2 overtime win against Avs

Philipp Kurashev’s second goal of the game, 1:48 into overtime, gave the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 come back win over the Colorado Avalanche Saturday afternoon at SAP Center.

Bouncing back from a miserable start where they were out shot 9-0 in the early going after giving up a goal to the Av’s Martin Necas thirty seconds into the game, San Jose (4-6-2) got on the board late in the opening period on a Macklin Celebrini goal to tie the game at the first intermission. The goal extended Celebrini’s point streak to a career high seven games.

Kurashev gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead at the 4:07 mark of the second period before Nathan MacKinnon’s tenth goal of the season tied the game five minutes later, setting the stage for Kurashev’s OT heroics.

“We’re getting better,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky stated after the game. “We’re learning lessons as we go. I liked our third period a lot.”

The Avalanche (7-1-5) came into the game with the best record in the league. Colorado goalie Mackenzie Blackwood made made 20 saves in his season debut after being sidelined by an injury in the offseason.

“They’ve got a lot of young talent that is pretty dangerous at times,” said Blackwood, who played a season and a half with San Jose. “They’re on the right track, and are going to be a good team in the future.”

San Jose returns to the ice tomorrow night for a 5pm matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.

GAME NOTES:

Yaraslov Askarov stopped 36 of the 38 goals he faced for the Sharks.

The victory was the Sharks first against Colorado in 13 games.

Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar’s brother, forward Taylor Makar, made his NHL debut Saturday afternoon after being called up from the AHL. The Makar’s became the first set of brothers to play for the Avs / Quebec franchise since Anton and Peter Stastny played for the Nordiques near the end of the 1989 season.
