Athlete of the Week: Nicki Rucki

Alhambra High School senior Nicki Rucki (1) is this week’s Tribune Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Matthew C. Rinn of State Farm.

Rucki, who plays goalkeeper for the Lady Bulldog soccer team, had a solid week between the sticks, helping the Bulldogs keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Concord on Jan. 11.

The senior captain also gave the Bulldogs a great chance at beating the tough Las Lomas Knights on Friday, Jan. 13, with her six saves.

The Bulldogs lost that game 1-0, but Rucki’s six saves kept the Bulldogs in the game.

“With Nicki not there, they could’ve probably scored a couple of goals,” said coach Ed Marinelli of his keepers’ efforts.

On at least three occasions the senior shot-stopper was able to keep the Knights at bay in one-on-one opportunities in front of goal. That included saving a pair of efforts from goal scorer Haley Brown, who is a CSU Fullerton commit.

“She saved some point blank one-on-ones with their leading scorer (shooting on goal),” Marinelli said. “She kept us in the game the entire time and saved it from being two or three goals.”

Rucki has been playing at the varsity level since her freshman year, and has also played as a forward for the Bulldogs.
