Former Giants ace Kevin Gausman pitched the first shutout of his 12 year career to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7–0 win over the Athletics Saturday afternoon.
Gausman (5-4, 4.00) was dominant throughout, striking out 10 and only walking one while giving up five hits. “To get the first one in my career 10 years after it started makes it that much more special,” Gausman said.
Toronto pieced together a run in the first on a Danny Jansen sacrifice following three straight walks by Oakland starter and loser Luis Medina (0-1, 5.23) before breaking the game open with a five run fifth inning.
Kevin Kiermaier led off with a home run before Medina lost his control after retiring the next two batters. Consecutive doubles by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Jansen made the score 4-0 and the rout was on.
A ninth inning Justin Turner RBI single following Bichette’s second double of the game provided the contest’s final margin.
The two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of the three game series with Mitch Spence (4-3, 3.86) taking the hill for Oakland. The Blue Jays have yet to announce their starter.
